You may have heard this term a lot while looking for a wedding photographer as I think it’s become quite trendy. But it is a certain style and that style may not suit you or your day so have a little read about exactly what it entails.
Also known as photojournalistic or reportage-style, documentary wedding photographers aim to document the events of the day as they unfold naturally, without directing or interfering.
Rather than posing the couple and guests for formal shots, documentary wedding photographers focus on capturing the genuine emotions, interactions, and details of the wedding day. We aim to tell a story through our photographs, creating a visual narrative that reflects the authentic atmosphere and the moments as they truly are.
I come from a photojournalistic background and approach weddings with a journalistic mindset. I observe and anticipate moments, capturing candid shots of the couple, their families, and guests throughout the day. I love to use a combination of available light and discreet equipment to blend in, allowing me to capture genuine moments without disrupting the flow of the wedding day.
The resulting photographs from being a documentary wedding photographer tend to be more natural, spontaneous, and unposed, which I believe reflects the true vibe of your wedding day. They provide a realistic and immersive representation of the event, capturing small details, raw emotions, showing us as our true selves.
It’s about waiting for the moment and not stepping in.
Stepping back and giving you some space to relax and forget that you are having a photoshoot.
Having a camera pointed at you and your guests can change the way people behave and so breaking that barrier by blending in and introducing myself often makes all the difference.
