It’s easy to think a wedding needs every minute planned.
A full schedule. Constant entertainment. A feeling that something always has to be happening.
Lottie and George’s wedding was a reminder that it doesn’t.
From the ceremony at Lewes Castle to the evening at The Gun Brewery, the day was given space to breathe. Drinks lasted as long as they needed to. Conversations weren’t interrupted by the next item on the timetable. Nothing felt hurried or over-produced. It all seemed to unfold naturally.
I think that came down to Lottie and George themselves. They’re incredibly easy-going people, and the atmosphere of the day reflected that from beginning to end.
Lewes Castle was the perfect place to start. Sitting above the town, it’s one of those venues that feels both historic and surprisingly relaxed. After the ceremony, guests stayed in the castle grounds for drinks while we took a few family photographs and some portraits before everyone made the short journey to The Gun Brewery.
I love this combination of venues. They couldn’t be more different, but they work so well together. The castle brings centuries of history and incredible views across Lewes, while The Gun Brewery has a completely different feel; contemporary, welcoming and effortlessly relaxed. Rather than feeling like two separate celebrations, moving between them simply felt like the next chapter of the same day.
One thing I don’t say often enough is how much good food shapes a wedding. Field Food served, without question, one of the best meals I’ve had in over a decade of photographing weddings. Beautiful, seasonal food that people genuinely talked about afterwards. Pat’s Pizza was also the perfect pairing!
As the light began to soften, we stepped outside for a few final photographs before everyone headed back inside. The evening light around The Gun Brewery is always worth making time for. It doesn’t need much—just good light, a relaxed couple and ten quiet minutes away from the party.
A few notes if you’re planning a wedding at Lewes Castle & The Gun Brewery
If you’re looking for two venues that complement each other beautifully, I’d happily recommend this combination. Lewes Castle offers an unforgettable setting for a ceremony and drinks, while The Gun Brewery creates a relaxed, modern space for the evening celebrations. They’re close enough that the day flows naturally, but each has its own distinct character.
And if you book Field Food… trust me, you’re in for a treat.
