Carol and Adam married at Rye Town Hall, followed by celebrations at The George in Rye and an evening trip to Camber Sands.
Rye is an interesting place to photograph a wedding. There’s a wonderful mix of architecture, narrow streets and people going about their everyday lives. I particularly enjoy that contrast, a wedding taking place against the backdrop of an ordinary day.
Their wedding was intimate, with family very much at the centre of it. After the ceremony, everyone made their way to The George, just a short walk through town.
Later that evening, we drove out to Camber Sands for some photographs.
The wind was relentless, and any idea of neat, carefully composed portraits quickly went out of the window. But I think that’s what made the photographs interesting. There was movement in everything, the clothes, the hair, the landscape itself.
Rather than trying to control it, we worked with what was there.
I’ve always been more interested in photographs that have a sense of something happening than ones where everything is perfectly arranged. Sometimes the things you can’t plan end up being the most memorable.
Camber Sands gave us something completely different from the earlier photographs in Rye. Open space, changing light and a little chaos from the weather.
And actually, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
